The Cathedral of Santa Maria la Menor, also known as La Catedral Primada de América, short for: Basílica Catedral Metropolitana Santa María de la Encarnación Primada de América, is a significant historical and religious landmark located in the Colonial Zone of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. Construction of the cathedral began in 1512 and was completed in 1546, making it the oldest cathedral in the Americas. The cathedral is dedicated to Saint Mary of the Incarnation and is the seat of the Archbishop of Santo Domingo.

The cathedral features a mix of Gothic and Baroque architectural styles, with three naves and 14 side chapels. The main facade of the cathedral is made of limestone and features three doors, the central one being the most ornate. The cathedral’s interior is adorned with religious art and artifacts, including a wooden crucifix that is said to have been brought to the Americas by Christopher Columbus.

Catedral Primada de América has played an important role in the country’s religious and cultural history. It was the site of the first mass in the Americas and has been visited by numerous religious and political leaders over the centuries.
