Independence Park, or Parque Independencia, is a historic park located in the Colonial Zone of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. The park is home to the Altar de la Patria, a mausoleum that holds the remains of the founding fathers of the Dominican Republic: Juan Pablo Duarte, Francisco del Rosario Sánchez, and Ramón Matías Mella.
La Puerta del Conde, is situated inside the park on it’s east side, a gate that symbolizes the ideals of freedom for the Dominican people. The gate, also known as the Door of February 27, was the main way in and out of the city of Santo Domingo and was the entrance to the original walled city. The walls surrounding the park serve as a place for temporary exhibitions placed by the Ministry of Culture, displaying a variety of literary, artistic, and historical events.
