Plaza de España, is a monumental square situated in Santo Domingo’s Colonial Zone, the capital of the Dominican Republic. This historic square is surrounded by colonial buildings and is an essential part of the city’s rich history. It is located in front of the Alcázar de Colón (Columbus Alcazar) and is also known as Plaza de la Hispanidad.
The square houses the statue of Nicolás de Ovando, the founder of the city, on the occidental bank of the river. Additionally, there is a 1753 sun clock in front of the historical Royal Houses Museum. The Plaza de España is surrounded by bars and restaurants that set up their terraces on the square at twilight, offering visitors a chance to enjoy the lively atmosphere and the typical Dominican party.
Plaza de España is a significant location in Santo Domingo’s Zona Colonial, with a section of the original city wall running along the eastern edge. The large bronze statue in the center of the Plaza is of Nicolas de Ovando.
The Colonial City of Santo Domingo, including Plaza de la Hispanidad, is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, preserving its integrity and authenticity. The square is a testament to the city’s history and the multicultural understanding developed through the crossing of native, European, and African cultures.
